S1 – S3 Mathematics

Rothesay School

Education Scotland say that “A broad general education will include all of the experiences and outcomes across all curriculum areas up to and including the third level. These should be experienced by all pupils, as far as this is consistent with their learning needs and prior achievements.

This should enable and motivate learners to develop to their fullest across the four capacities. Most learners will progress into the fourth level in many aspects of their learning before the end of S3, laying strong foundations for more specialised learning, qualifications and lifelong learning.

For those learners whose needs are best met through learning at levels below the fourth level, the framework provides the opportunity to build on their prior learning and provide breadth, depth and enrichment.”

In order to accommodate this in maths, our pupils will follow one of three pathways in order to experience the full breadth and depth of the mathematics and numeracy E’s & O’s.

These are designed for pupils to work at the correct level and move through the BGE studying the correct topics in an order best for the learning & teaching of the maths skills involved in the Es & Os.

Pupils can move between pathways to ensure they are working at the most appropriate level and the diagram below shows the potential progression route for most pupils.

Pathway 1 is designed for our most able pupils and covers Curriculum for Excellence third and fourth levels. Both Pathway 1 and 2 follow the same structure through S1 & S2 with Pathway 1 pupils experiencing more challenge and depth as they work their way through the course.  In S3 Pathway 1 accelerates the learning of the pupils in order to prepare them for their National Qualification course they will sit in S4.

Pathway 1 is a route to start the National 5 Mathematics (N5M) course in S4.

Pathway 2 is designed for our pupils to cover Curriculum for Excellence third (and some fourth) levels outcomes. Both Pathway 1 and 2 follow the same structure through S1 & S2 with Pathway 1 pupils experiencing more challenge and depth as they work their way through the course.  In S3 Pathway 2 consolidates the learning from S1/2 in order to prepare them for their National Qualification course they will sit in S4.

Pathway 2 is a route to start the National 4 Mathematics (N4M) course in S4.

Pathway 3 is designed for our pupils to cover Curriculum for Excellence second (and some third) level outcomes.  Pathway 3 allows consistent progress through the outcomes from S1-S3 in order to prepare them for their National Qualification course they will sit in S4.

Pathway 3 is a route to start the National 3/4 Applications of Mathematics (N3A/N4A) course in S4.
